Smart Building Checklist: Getting Ready for Implementing Smart Building Solutions 101

Determining the energy efficiency of your facility is not a small task. You will need to consider the impact of your operational efficiency, including the specific equipment you use and systems that control it, the operation of equipment used to provide a superior experience to your customers, employees or other occupants and the systems involving security and safety, such as IT monitoring, property surveillance and alert systems.

If this sounds like an impossible challenge, rest assured that ENTOUCH has your back. Use the following smart building checklist to review your energy efficiency measures and figure out where you stand today. Even if you lack some of the information, select the option that most closely aligns to your knowledge.

Type of System

Connected to the Internet or Cloud?

Does It Operate Around-the-Clock?

General Operations

HVAC

Electrical outlets and devices that use electricity.

Lighting systems.

Elevators, escalators or “dumb waiters.”

Fire alarms or smoke detectors.

Equipment monitoring systems.

Recycle bins.

Services For Occupants, Including Workers and Customers.

Internet Via WiFi.

Location-based services, such as GPS markers.

Smart conference, break and meeting rooms.

Asset management tools, including parking, storage space and outdoor grounds management.

Security

Do they come on automatically, or stay on permanently?

Can you access them remotely?

Do you receive automated threat alerts/ notifications?

Is information stored in the cloud, using stringent cybersecurity measures?

Security Cameras

Entryway and Emergency Exit Locks and Access.

Please only mark the areas that do not have an "X."

Your Local Area Network (LAN).

Do systems relay information through secure servers and firewalls?

Do you have around-the-clock monitoring of your IT networks?

For example, you might consider adding flexible flush valves in toilets, or wirelessly-controlled sprinkler systems. If it is something you actively work on or with, such as a physical device, it probably goes under operational efficiency. If it deals with the experience of your customers, which may include comfort measures, such as smart plugins as a value-added service during wait times, place it under the middle section. Lastly, if you have a concern that has not been met with respect to your security measures, use the final section to document it. For each of the sections in this checklist, you can get a comprehensive view of your facilities management operations. However, each section includes at least three blank spaces. These are areas where you can “fill in” other areas of concern that may not be addressed in this checklist.
